Cell phone (telefone celular) is a wireless, portable, long-range, electronic telephone, which during travel can seamlessly change antenna connections, from one radio reception cell to another radio reception cell, without dropping or losing the ongoing call. Here are some interesting facts about Mobile Phones :-

1. The earliest "wireless" communication can be traced back to 1865 and Dr. Mahlon Loomis of Virginia. Using the atmosphere as a conductor, Dr. Loomis transmitted messages within an 18-mile range.

2. The first mobile telephone call made from a car occurred in St. Louis, Missouri, USA on June 17, 1946, using the Bell System's Mobile Telephone Service.

3. Cell phones came into existence because of the invention of hexagonal cells, for the base stations by Bell Labs engineers at AT&T.

4. The wireless telephone technologies are grouped under heads known as generations, starting from zero generation or 0G. The current generation going on is 4G.

5. 1 billion of the world’s 4+ billion mobiles phones are now Smart Phones. 200+ million (1/3 of all users) access Facebook from a mobile device

6. All cell phones emit electromagnetic radiation. This radiation from your cell phone can travel up to 20 feet effecting not only you but family and friends.

7. Apple has sold more than 60 million iPhones world-wide since the iPhones initial launch.

8. Although not known as a cell phone manufacturer today, the International Business Machines (IBM) company began making a smartphone as early as 1993.

11. Cell phone manufacturers have the technology to reduce the radiation that would escape into the user’s head, but they are no willing to do so. This is because in doing so their profits would decrease.

12. Research has shown that mobile phone users are at 2.5 times risk of brain tumors caused by phone radiation.

13. Up to 60% of the radiation emitted by a typical cell phone, will be absorbed by the user’s head.

14. The first hand-held mobile phone was demonstrated by Dr Martin Cooper of Motorola in 1973, using a handset weighing around 1 kg.

15. In the twenty years from 1990 to 2010, worldwide mobile phone subscriptions grew from 12.4 million to over 4.6 billion, penetrating the developing economies and reaching the bottom of the economic pyramid.
